What Bath asks of a gate
A World Heritage city
The whole of Bath is a World Heritage Site and almost all of it is a conservation area, so Bath and North East Somerset Council has extra control over changes at the front of houses. A bespoke gate that suits the house, at the height of the existing wall, is usually the simplest route: an arched top or scroll work for a Georgian or Victorian front, plainer lines for newer homes. Check with the council before you order.
Bath stone walls and piers
Bath stone is beautiful, but it is soft, and an old wall or pier is not always fit to carry a steel-framed gate swinging on it. Where the stone is sound the gate hangs on it with fixings chosen not to split it. Where it is not, a slim steel post is set in concrete alongside and powder coated to match, so the stonework is left untouched.
Hillside drives
Bath sits in a bowl, and Lansdown, Combe Down, Widcombe and Larkhall climb steeply from it. Drives on a slope catch a straight-bottomed gate or leave a large gap. The bottom of the gate can be raked to follow the ground, the leaves can be hung to open away from the slope, and on a short steep frontage a sliding gate can run across instead of swinging.
Boards and frame colours
Composite boards
Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.
Steel frames
Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black is the traditional choice against Bath stone, and anthracite and greys suit newer homes.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Bath
How much do composite gates cost in Bath?
As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, the shape, the slope and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.
Do I need permission for a gate in Bath?
Possibly, as almost all of the city is a conservation area. Check with Bath and North East Somerset Council before you order.
Can a gate be hung on Bath stone?
If the stone is sound, yes, with fixings chosen not to split it. If not, a slim steel post goes in alongside.
My drive is on a hill. Can I still have gates?
Usually. The bottom can follow the slope, the leaves can open away from it, or a sliding gate can run across.
Why do you ask for photos before visiting?
The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.
Do you cover Keynsham, Bathampton and Combe Down?
Yes, along with Larkhall, Weston, Batheaston, Saltford, Radstock and the areas around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
Ready for a price? Send a few photos and the width of your opening, and a local fabricator will come back to you with a provisional price.
