What Cornwall asks of a gate

A Cornish hedge is not a hedge, and it will not hold a gate

Half the boundaries in the county are Cornish hedges — earth and stone banks faced with turf, some of them older than anything else on the property. They look immovable and they are, in the sense that they have stood for centuries. But they are not a structure you can hang a gate from. There is nothing continuous inside to fix to, the face moves with the seasons, and cutting into one to make a proper foundation damages something that is often protected and always expensive to rebuild properly. The answer is not to fight it: the gate goes on its own posts, set independently alongside the hedge, and the hedge carries on doing what it has always done. Told at survey this is straightforward. Discovered on installation day it is not.

Getting a four-metre gate to the property is part of the job

Cornwall's lanes are the narrowest in the country and a great many of them are single track with granite or hedge either side and passing places that a van fits through and a long load does not. For most gates this is irrelevant. For a wide driveway pair, a sliding gate or anything that arrives in one piece, it is a real constraint and it is better raised at survey than discovered by a driver reversing half a mile. Where access genuinely will not take it, the answer is usually to build in sections and assemble on site, which costs a little more and is far better than the alternative. Two coasts, two different specifications

It is easy to treat Cornwall as one coastal county and specify everything the same way. That is wrong in both directions. The north coast — Newquay, St Ives, and the whole run to Land's End — takes the Atlantic with nothing in front of it, and a frontage there needs a genuinely marine grade of finish and fixings. The south, around Falmouth, the Fal and the creeks, is comparatively sheltered, and specifying it as though it were Newquay means paying for protection the property does not need. A few miles across the peninsula changes the answer. Which coast you are on is one of the first things we establish.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Cornwall

Can you hang a gate off my Cornish hedge?

No, and nobody should. There is nothing continuous inside a Cornish hedge to fix into, the face moves with the seasons, and cutting a foundation into one damages something that is often protected and expensive to rebuild. The gate goes on its own posts set alongside it instead. That is the normal arrangement here, not a workaround, and it is completely straightforward if it is planned at survey.

Our lane is single track. Is that a problem?

Not usually, but it is worth mentioning when you call rather than on the day. A wide driveway pair or a sliding gate arriving in one piece needs an approach that will physically take it. Where it will not, we build in sections and assemble on site, which costs a little more and is a great deal better than a driver reversing half a mile back up a lane.

Is composite a sensible choice this far west?

It is a better one than timber. There is no coating to lift, chalk or need recoating on a cycle nobody keeps to in this weather, and the board does not take up water so it does not swell or split. What needs specifying properly is everything it hangs on — the frame, hinges, posts and fixings — and on an exposed frontage that is where the conversation should be.
