What Truro asks of a gate

Georgian streets and the conservation area

Truro has some of the best Georgian streets in the south west, from Lemon Street to Walsingham Place, and the city centre and surrounding streets sit in a conservation area. Planning rules are tighter in those streets, and Cornwall Council will want anything new at the front to respect the terraces. That usually points to a painted-black frame, vertical boards or railings-style bars, and a height that lines up with the neighbours. Ask the council's planning team before you commit if you live in the centre.

Valleys, rivers and slopes

Three rivers meet in Truro, so most of the city sits on the sides of valleys, and roads out to Highertown, Kenwyn and Malpas rise sharply. Ask anyone with a sloping drive: a square-bottomed gate scrapes. The fabricator measures the fall across the opening and shapes the bottom rail to match it, or suggests a gate that runs sideways on a short, steep frontage where swinging is not practical.

Side gates on the newer estates

Threemilestone, Langarth and the newer roads around the edge of the city have homes with a passage down the side for bins and bikes. That gate gets used every day, so it needs a latch that catches, a lock that works from both sides and enough width for a wheelie bin. Anthracite frames with horizontal boards suit most of these homes.

Boards and frame colours

Composite boards

Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.

Steel frames

Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black suits the older streets, and anthracite sits well with newer homes.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Truro

How much do composite gates cost in Truro?

As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, the shape, the slope and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.

I live off Lemon Street. Are there planning rules?

Very likely, as the centre is a conservation area. Speak to Cornwall Council planning before ordering; a black frame at the height of the neighbouring walls is the usual answer.

Our drive drops away from the road. Will gates scrape?

Not if the bottom rail is shaped to the fall, which the fabricator measures on site. A sliding gate is an option on short, steep drives.

How wide should a side gate be for bins?

Wide enough for your largest bin with a little to spare, usually around 900mm or more. Measure the passage and include it with your photos.

Why do you ask for photos before visiting?

The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.

Do you cover Threemilestone, Probus and Chacewater?

Yes, along with Kenwyn, Malpas, Shortlanesend, Tregony and the villages around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.

Ready for a price? Send a few photos and the width of your opening, and a local fabricator will come back to you with a provisional price.
