Guide prices

Side and garden gates

£900 to £1,500

A single gate, fabricated and fitted. The boards, the lock and the hardware for the coast decide where it falls.

Driveway gates

£1,800 to £5,000+

Fabricated and fitted. The width, hinged or sliding, and the exposure decide where it falls.

Width of the opening — the biggest single factor, and what decides between a single gate, a pair and a sliding gate.

Atlantic weather — heavier hinges, deep posts and coated hardware for the north coast.

Wind-blown sand — hinged gates, or a cantilever slider with no ground track to clog.

Boards and vans — wide or double side gates for surfboards, bikes and campervans.

Guide prices only. Your provisional price is worked out from your photos and measurements.

What Newquay asks of a gate

Gales off the Atlantic

Newquay faces straight out into the Atlantic, and in winter the wind comes in hard across Pentire, Porth and the headlands. A gate here takes a battering that an inland gate never sees, so it is built heavier: a stiffer steel frame, hinges rated for the weight of the leaf, posts concreted deep, and a drop bolt or keep that holds a pair firmly shut. The frame is zinc coated before the powder coat so the salt in the air does not get under it.

Sand in the works

Close to Fistral, Towan and Watergate, sand blows into gardens and drives and finds its way into anything with moving parts. A sliding gate on a ground track can clog and stick, so hinged gates are usually the better choice near the beaches. Where a sliding gate is needed for space, a cantilever design that hangs clear of the ground avoids the problem altogether.

Room for boards, bikes and the van

A lot of Newquay homes store surfboards, bikes or a campervan down the side or at the back. A standard side gate is often too narrow for that. A wider single gate, or a pair of side gates that open fully, makes getting a board or a bike through easy, and a driveway pair can be made wide enough for a van with room to spare.

Boards and frame colours

Composite boards

Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.

Steel frames

Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Anthracite and black are the usual choices on the coast, and they hide salt marks between washes.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Newquay

How much do composite gates cost in Newquay?

As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, hinged or sliding, the exposure and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.

Will a gate stand up to the wind on the coast?

Yes, if it is built for it: a stiffer frame, heavier hinges, deep posts and a drop bolt on a pair.

Is a sliding gate a good idea near the beach?

A cantilever sliding gate that hangs clear of the ground is. A gate running on a ground track can clog with blown sand.

Can you make a side gate wide enough for surfboards?

Yes. A wider single gate or a pair of side gates can be made to suit what you need to get through.

Why do you ask for photos before visiting?

The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.

Do you cover Crantock, Quintrell Downs and St Columb?

Yes, along with Porth, Pentire, St Columb Minor, Mawgan Porth and the areas around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
