What Hertfordshire asks of a gate
Empty houses in the daytime change the brief
This is commuter country, and a large proportion of the properties we quote for are empty between eight and six. That shifts the emphasis from appearance alone towards a gate that is genuinely closed rather than decoratively shut — hinges that cannot be lifted, a frame that resists levering, no foothold beside the post. It also makes automation more useful than it is elsewhere, because a gate that has to be opened by hand tends to be left open.
Deliveries are the practical problem to solve
A closed gate and a household that is out all day means parcels, and a gate that gets propped open for the courier is not doing its job. Intercoms, keypads and a controlled opening for deliveries all solve it in different ways, and the right one depends on how often you are out and who you actually want to let in. It costs far less decided at survey than retro-fitted to a finished installation.
The garden cities have their own rules
Letchworth and Welwyn were designed as a whole, and both carry design guidance and in places covenants covering what can be changed at the front of a property. That can affect gate height, style and material in ways that ordinary planning rules would not. It does not mean you cannot have a gate — it means the design needs to be right first time. Conservation frontages and the Chilterns edge
St Albans, Berkhamsted, Harpenden and a good number of Hertfordshire villages have conservation areas and listed frontages, where height and material matter more than usual. Out towards Tring and the Chilterns the ground opens up and gets windier, which pushes the specification the other way — towards a partly open infill and heavier posts. The two ends of the county genuinely ask for different gates.
What affects the cost
Gate prices move on a handful of variables rather than a fixed rate. The main ones are:
Width of the opening — the single biggest factor, and what decides whether a single leaf, a pair or a sliding gate is appropriate.
Height and infill — a taller, fully boarded gate uses more material and puts more load on the frame and posts.
Frame and material — composite board on a metal frame, metal only, or composite with a decorative top.
Automation and access control — intercoms, keypads and delivery access are worth deciding up front rather than retro-fitting.
Power to the gate — if there is no supply at the opening, ducting is groundworks as much as electrics.
Design constraints — conservation areas and garden city guidance can shape height, style and material.

What changes on an exposed site towards Tring or the Chilterns?
The infill and the posts. Open, higher ground means more wind on the gate, and a tall solid pair takes the full force of it. A partly open infill or a lower top rail lets wind through, and heavier posts set deeper carry what remains. It is specified once we have seen how exposed the opening actually is.
