What Exeter asks of a gate
Georgian and Victorian streets
St Leonards, Pennsylvania, Mount Radford and the streets around Southernhay are full of Georgian and Victorian houses, and much of that part of the city sits in conservation areas. Exeter City Council has extra control over changes at the front of houses there. A gate that suits the period, at the height of the existing wall, with an arched top or finials where the house calls for it, is usually the simplest route. Check with the council first if you live in one of those areas.
Heavitree stone and old brick
Exeter is known for its red Heavitree stone, and plenty of garden walls across Heavitree, St Thomas and the older villages are built from it or from soft old brick. Those walls look solid but were never meant to carry a steel-framed gate. Where the wall is not up to it, a slim steel post is set in concrete alongside and powder coated to match the gate, so the old stone is left as it is.
Side gates on the new estates
Cranbrook, Monkerton, Newcourt and the newer roads around Pinhoe have homes with narrow side passages and bins kept round the back. A side gate there needs to be wide enough for a wheelie bin, lockable from both sides, and in a colour that sits with grey windows and render. Anthracite frames and horizontal boards are the usual choice, and a matching gate can be made for the back garden too.
Boards and frame colours
Composite boards
Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.
Steel frames
Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black suits the older streets, and anthracite sits well with newer homes.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Exeter
How much do composite gates cost in Exeter?
As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, the shape, the lock and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.
I live in a conservation area. Can I have a composite gate?
Often, yes, if it suits the house and the street. Check with Exeter City Council first; a gate at the height of the existing wall is usually the simplest route.
Can a gate be fixed to an old stone wall?
If the stone is sound. If not, a slim steel post is set alongside so the wall is not asked to take the weight.
Will a side gate fit a wheelie bin through?
Yes. Tell us what needs to pass through and the gate is made wide enough, with a lock you can open from both sides.
Why do you ask for photos before visiting?
The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.
Do you cover Topsham, Pinhoe and Cranbrook?
Yes, along with Heavitree, St Thomas, Alphington, Exwick, Exminster and the areas around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
