Guide prices

Side and garden gates

£900 to £1,500

A single gate, fabricated and fitted. The shape, the lock and any scroll work decide where it falls.

Driveway gates

£1,800 to £5,000+

Fabricated and fitted. The width, an arched or straight top, and the finish decide where it falls.

Width of the opening — the biggest single factor, and what decides between a single gate, a pair and a sliding gate.

Traditional shapes — arched tops, finials and scroll work for older houses.

Flint and brick — gates hung on steel posts where an old wall cannot take the weight.

Conservation areas — the city centre, the Close and much of the older city, where the council has extra say.

Guide prices only. Your provisional price is worked out from your photos and measurements.

What Salisbury asks of a gate

Older houses and the conservation areas

Much of central Salisbury, around the Cathedral Close and the old streets laid out in a grid, is a conservation area, as are some of the older streets beyond it. Wiltshire Council has extra control over changes at the front of houses there. An arched or traditional gate at the height of the existing wall usually fits best. Check with the council before you order if your home is in one of those areas.

Flint, brick and old garden walls

Salisbury and the villages around it are full of flint and brick walls, some of them very old. They look solid, but flint set in lime mortar is not built to take the weight of a steel-framed gate swinging on it. The usual answer is a slim steel post set in concrete alongside the wall, powder coated to match the gate, so the old wall is left as it is.

Village drives along the river valleys

The Avon, Nadder and Bourne valleys bring the villages close to the city: Wilton, Britford, Laverstock, Stratford-sub-Castle and the Woodfords. Plots there are bigger and drives are wider, often onto a lane. A pair of driveway gates with an arched top suits the houses, and wide gates can be built ready for a motor if you want one later.

Boards and frame colours

Composite boards

Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.

Steel frames

Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black is the traditional choice for older houses, and anthracite suits newer ones.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Salisbury

How much do composite gates cost in Salisbury?

As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, an arched or straight top, the lock and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.

Do you make arched gates for older houses?

Yes. Arched tops, finials and scroll work are made in the same steel frame as a plain gate.

Can a gate hang on a flint wall?

Usually on a slim steel post set in concrete alongside, so the old wall is not asked to carry the weight.

I live near the Close. Do I need permission for a gate?

Possibly, as the city centre is a conservation area. Check with Wiltshire Council first.

Why do you ask for photos before visiting?

The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.

Do you cover Wilton, Laverstock and Amesbury?

Send your postcode with your photos and we will confirm which fabricator can take on your job, whether you are in Salisbury, Wilton, Laverstock, Amesbury or the villages around.
