Sloping ground and gates that swing uphill

Alloa sits between two quite different pieces of ground. South of the town is the flat carse by the Forth; north and east, towards Sauchie, Alva and the Hillfoots, the land starts climbing towards the Ochils. A great many driveways in and around the town are on a noticeable slope, and that is the single thing that most often goes wrong with a gate here.

A gate has to clear the ground through its whole arc, not just where it sits when closed. On a driveway that rises towards the house, a gate hung to look right when shut will catch the tarmac halfway through opening — and the usual bodge, lifting the whole gate to clear it, leaves a gap under the closed gate that defeats the point of having one.

There are proper answers. The gate can be built to follow the rake of the ground so it stays parallel to it. Rising-butt hinges lift it as it swings. It can be hung to open the other way, downhill. Or a sliding gate sidesteps the arc entirely, which on a steep drive is often the cleanest solution. Which one suits is decided at survey with a level, not from a photograph.

What affects the cost in Alloa

Fall across the opening — how much the ground rises or falls decides the hinge type and often the whole design.
Swing direction — opening downhill is sometimes possible and sometimes not, and it changes the specification.
Sliding versus swinging — on a steep drive a sliding gate can be the cheaper answer once groundwork is counted.

Common questions

My drive slopes. Can I still have a pair of gates?

Usually yes. The options are a gate built to follow the rake of the ground, rising-butt hinges that lift it as it opens, or hanging it to swing downhill instead. On a steep drive a sliding gate avoids the problem altogether. It is measured with a level at survey rather than guessed.

Why is there a gap under my current gate?

Almost always because it was lifted to stop it catching on a rising drive. It is the common shortcut and it undoes most of what a gate is for. Building the gate to the slope in the first place costs no more than building it square.

Do you cover Tullibody, Alva and Tillicoultry?
