Guide prices

Side and garden gates

£900 to £1,500

A single gate, fabricated and fitted. The lock, the finish, an arched top and finials decide where it falls.

Driveway gates

£1,800 to £5,000+

Fabricated and fitted. The width, the height, hinged or sliding, and the frame finish decide where it falls.

Width of the opening — the biggest single factor, and what decides between a single gate, a pair and a sliding gate.

Coastal finish — a galvanised frame under the powder coat, and stainless fixings, for homes near the shore.

Ready for a motor — posts, hinges and a cable duct set up now, so automation can be added later without rework.

The details — arched tops, finials, a decorative screen top, and the lock.

Guide prices only. Your provisional price is worked out from your photos and measurements.

What Birkenhead asks of a gate

Sandstone villas and conservation areas

Oxton, Claughton and the streets around Birkenhead Park are full of Victorian villas built from local sandstone, with stone boundary walls and gateposts, and several of those streets are conservation areas where Wirral Council has the final say on what goes up at the front. A gate there is judged on how it sits with the wall and the house. A lower gate, or one with an open top section, usually fits better than a full-height solid panel, and a steel post set just inside an old stone gatepost carries the weight without loading the stone.

Wind and salt along the coast

From New Brighton and Wallasey round to Moreton, Hoylake and West Kirby, homes take the wind straight off the Irish Sea and the Dee, and the salt that comes with it. Salt finds any bare steel, so near the shore a frame is best galvanised before it is powder coated, with stainless fixings and hinges that can be greased. A solid gate on an open seafront plot also takes a real wind load, so the posts are set deeper and a pair gets a drop bolt to keep the leaves from rattling.

Wide drives and gates ready for a motor

The bigger plots in Heswall, Caldy and West Kirby often have wide drives, and many people who start with manual gates add a motor a few years later. It is far easier to plan for that on day one: posts sized for the extra load, hinges positioned for an arm or ram, and a duct laid under the drive while it is up. A gate built ready for automation costs little more, and saves digging the drive up again.

Boards and frame colours

Composite boards

Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.

Steel frames

Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour, over a galvanised finish near the coast. Black suits sandstone and brick alike, but a frame can be matched to your windows or doors.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Birkenhead

How much do composite gates cost in Birkenhead?

As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, hinged or sliding, a coastal finish and the details all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.

Can I have gates in a conservation area such as Oxton?

Usually, but check with Wirral Council before you commit, as conservation areas have extra rules on what can go up at the front of a house. A lower gate, or one with an open top section, sits better with a sandstone wall and is more likely to be acceptable.

Will salt air rust the frame?

Not if the frame is specified for it. Near the shore, the steel is galvanised before it is powder coated, and the fixings are stainless, so the salt has no bare steel to work on. Say how close you are to the sea when you send your photos.

Can my gates be motorised later?

Yes, if they are built ready for it. Posts sized for the load, hinges positioned for the motor, and a duct laid under the drive now mean automation can be added later without rework.

Why do you ask for photos before visiting?

The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.

Do you cover Wallasey and Heswall?

Yes, along with Oxton, Prenton, Bebington, Moreton, Hoylake, West Kirby and the villages across Wirral. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
