What Liverpool asks of a gate
Turning a front garden into a drive
Across Liverpool, plenty of front gardens are being turned into parking, and the gates come at the end of that job rather than the start. Two things come first. Driving across the pavement needs a dropped kerb, which Liverpool City Council has to approve, so check that before ordering gates for a new opening. And a new hard surface in a front garden needs planning permission if it covers more than five square metres and does not let rainwater drain through, which permeable paving avoids. Once those are settled, the gates are sized to the new opening. They have to open inwards, not out over the pavement, so the depth of the new parking space decides whether a pair, a single leaf or a sliding gate works.
Bay windows and low front walls
A lot of the city is Edwardian and inter-war housing with bay windows behind a low brick wall, like the house in the photo at the top of this page. At the front, a gate tends to look right at about the height of the piers either side, so the bay and the front door stay in view, and anything up to a metre high next to a road needs no planning permission. Taller, fully boarded gates suit a side drive or the back better. If you want to keep the street view and still stop a dog getting out, bars above a composite lower half are a good middle way.
Houses split into flats
Many larger Victorian houses in Liverpool are now divided into flats, with one gate shared by several households. A shared gate gets used far more than a family one, so it needs to close on its own and latch every time: self-closing hinges, a lock that suits everyone who uses it, and a frame that stays square under daily use. A steel frame with composite boards copes with that far better than timber, and needs no painting between tenants.
Boards and frame colours
Composite boards
Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.
Steel frames
Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black and anthracite grey are the usual choices, and an all-metal gate can be coated to match.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Liverpool
How much do composite gates cost in Liverpool?
As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, hinged or sliding, composite or metal, and details such as an arched top all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.
Do I need a dropped kerb before I fit driveway gates?
If you will be driving across the pavement, yes. Liverpool City Council has to approve a dropped kerb, so sort that out before ordering gates for a new opening. Gates across an existing drive with a dropped kerb already in place need nothing extra.
Can my gates open outwards over the pavement?
No. Gates next to a pavement or road must open inwards. If the drive is too short for that with a car parked on it, a sliding gate may work instead, as long as there is room beside the opening for it to slide into.
Can you make a shared gate for a house split into flats?
Yes. A shared gate is usually fitted with self-closing hinges and a lock that suits everyone who uses it, on a steel frame that stays square with daily use. Mention how many households use it when you send your photos.
Why do you ask for photos before visiting?
The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.
Do you cover Crosby, Woolton and Huyton?
Yes, along with Allerton, Childwall, West Derby, Walton, Maghull, Prescot and the areas around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
