What Chesterfield asks of a gate
Sloping drives
Chesterfield is built on hills, and plenty of drives rise or fall away from the road, or slope across the opening. A gate hung square on a drive that climbs behind it will catch the ground before it opens fully. There are three usual answers. Rising hinges lift the leaf as it swings. A raked bottom rail follows the line of the ground, so the gate sits higher at one end. Or the gate is hung higher overall, with the gap underneath kept as small as the slope allows. Gates cannot open outwards over a pavement or a road, so swinging them the other way is not an option on most front drives. A sliding gate needs a level run beside the opening, which rules it out on most steep drives. A photo taken from the side shows the fabricator the slope better than any measurement.
Old stone gateposts
Older houses in Chesterfield and the villages to the west, around Brampton, Ashgate and Holymoorside, are often built of local sandstone, with stone gateposts that once carried a timber or iron gate on hooks driven into the stone. Those posts are worth keeping, but they were not cut for a steel-framed composite leaf, which is heavier than the gate it replaces. The usual approach is to set a slim steel post just inside the stone one and hang the new gate from that, so the gatepost stays and the weight goes into a foundation built for it.
Out towards the Peak District
West of the town, villages run up to the edge of the Peak District National Park, which is its own planning authority and is stricter than most about what changes at the front of a house. Plots out there are also higher and more open to the weather. A fully boarded gate on an exposed drive takes a lot of wind, so the frame and posts are sized for it, and a pair is fitted with a drop bolt so the leaves do not rattle.
Boards and frame colours
Composite boards
Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.
Steel frames
Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black suits most boards and most stonework, but a frame can be matched to your windows or doors instead.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Chesterfield
How much do composite gates cost in Chesterfield?
As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, the slope of the drive, hinged or sliding, the lock and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.
My drive slopes. Can I still have gates?
Usually, yes. Rising hinges lift each leaf as it opens, a raked bottom rail can follow the slope, or the gates can be hung a little higher. Which one fits depends on how steep the drive is, so include a photo taken from the side when you send your enquiry.
Can my gates open outwards onto the pavement?
No. Gates are not allowed to open out over a pavement or road, so on most front drives they open inwards. Where there is no room for that, a sliding or folding gate may work instead, if the ground beside the opening allows.
Can you hang a new gate on an old stone gatepost?
Often the best answer is to keep the stone post and set a slim steel post just inside it to carry the new gate. A steel-framed composite gate is heavier than the gate the post was cut for, and this way the weight goes into a proper foundation rather than the stone.
Why do you ask for photos before visiting?
The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.
Do you cover Dronfield and Staveley?
Yes, along with Brampton, Brimington, Wingerworth, Holymoorside, Clay Cross, Bolsover and the villages around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
Ready for a price? Send a few photos and the width of your opening, and one from the side if it slopes. A local fabricator will come back to you with a provisional price.
