Guide prices
Side and garden gates
£900 to £1,500A single gate, fabricated and fitted. The lock, the finish, an arched top and finials decide where it falls.
Driveway gates
£1,800 to £5,000+Made and installed. Where it lands depends on the width, the gradient of the drive, whether it hinges or folds, and the specification.
How wide and how steep — width decides between a single gate and a pair; the gradient decides whether it needs a slanted bottom, rising hinges or a folding design.
Room to open — a short drive with a car on it may call for a folding gate, which costs more than a standard pair but needs half the room.
Old stone — fixing into a sound stone wall, or setting a slim steel post beside a gatepost that will not take the weight.
Exposure — homes on the high western edge of the city need a stronger frame and posts.

What Sheffield asks of a gate
Steep, short drives
Sheffield is a city of hills, and a lot of its drives are both steep and short, cut into the slope with a retaining wall either side. That leaves little room for gates. An inward-opening pair needs space to swing that a parked car often takes up, and on a steep drive the bottom of each leaf will hit the ground before the gate is fully open. Gates cannot open out over the pavement. The answers are a slanted bottom rail that follows the slope, rising hinges, or a folding gate, where each leaf is hinged in the middle and folds back on itself like a bifold door, so it needs about half the swing room. A sliding gate needs a level run beside the opening, which a hillside drive rarely has.
Stone villas and conservation areas
Large parts of the city, from Nether Edge and Broomhill to Ranmoor and Fulwood, are Victorian and Edwardian stone villas with stone boundary walls and gateposts, and several of those neighbourhoods are conservation areas. There, a gate is judged by how it sits with the street as much as by how it works, and Sheffield City Council has the final say on what needs permission. A lower gate, or one with an open top section, often sits better with an old stone wall than a full-height solid one. Where a stone gatepost will not take the weight of a steel-framed gate, a slim steel post can be set just inside it.
Out on the edge of the Peak
Sheffield runs right up to the moors, and part of the city lies inside the Peak District National Park, which is its own planning authority. Homes around Dore, Totley, Bradfield and Stocksbridge are higher and more exposed than the city centre, and a solid gate up there takes real wind. Frames and posts are sized for it, and a pair is fitted with a drop bolt so the leaves do not rattle.
Boards and frame colours
Composite boards
Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.
Steel frames
Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black suits most boards and sits well against Sheffield stone, but a frame can be matched to your windows or doors instead.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Sheffield
How much do composite gates cost in Sheffield?
As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, the slope, hinged, sliding or folding, the lock and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.
My drive is steep and short. What are my options?
A slanted bottom rail that follows the slope, rising hinges that lift each leaf as it opens, or a folding gate that needs about half the swing room of a standard pair. Gates cannot open out over the pavement. Send a photo from the side as well as the front, and the fabricator will tell you which will work.
Can a gate have a slanted bottom for a sloping drive?
Yes. The bottom rail can be made to follow the line of the ground, so the gate clears the drive when it opens without leaving a large gap at the low end.
I live in a conservation area. Can I still have gates?
Usually, but check with Sheffield City Council before you commit, as conservation areas have extra rules on what can go up at the front of a house. A lower gate, or one with an open top section, often sits better with a stone wall and is more likely to be acceptable.
Why do you ask for photos before visiting?
The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.
Do you cover Stocksbridge and Chapeltown?
Yes, along with the whole city and the villages around it, from Dore and Totley to Handsworth, Mosborough and Ecclesfield. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
Ready for a price? Send a few photos and the width of your opening, and one from the side if it slopes. A local fabricator will come back to you with a provisional price.
