Composite side and back gates

Width of the opening — the biggest single factor, and what decides between a single gate, a pair and a sliding gate.
What the gate hangs from — a sound brick pier, or a new steel post set alongside one that will not take the weight.
Exposure — on open ground a fully boarded gate needs a stronger frame and deeper posts.

What Doncaster asks of a gate
Brick piers, and whether they can carry the gate
Most drives in Doncaster are framed in brick: the 1930s semis around Bessacarr, Wheatley and Intake, the post-war estates, and the newer developments out at Auckley, Rossington and Edenthorpe. Brick is a good thing to hang a gate from when the pier was built for it. A lot of older front piers were not. They were built to finish a low wall, not to carry a steel-framed composite leaf, which is heavier than the timber gate it usually replaces. A heavy leaf on a light pier shows within a few winters as a gate that drops and catches on the latch. The fabricator looks for this in your photos and checks it on the visit. Where a pier will not take the weight, the usual answer is a steel post set alongside it, coated to match the frame. In the older villages to the west, such as Sprotbrough, Conisbrough and Tickhill, piers and walls are often local limestone rather than brick, and the same check applies.
Open ground to the east
East of the city the land flattens out towards Thorne, Hatfield, Moorends and Fishlake, and there is little to break the wind. A fully boarded composite gate is a solid panel, and on an exposed plot it acts like a sail, loading the hinges, posts and latch every time the wind gets up. That is not a reason to avoid one. It is a reason to size the frame and posts for it, and to set the posts deep in ground that can stay wet for long spells. If you would rather let some wind through, a decorative screen top, like the ones in the photos above, takes some of the load and lets light into a side passage. Composite boards do not rot or swell, which counts for more on low, wet ground than almost anywhere.
Newer estates, short drives and the rules
On many newer estates the front gardens are open plan, and the deeds can include a covenant limiting what goes up at the front. Side and back gates are rarely affected, but if you are thinking about driveway gates on a newer house, check your deeds before you spend anything. Planning rules apply too: a gate next to a road used by vehicles generally needs permission above one metre, and above two metres elsewhere. Bawtry and Tickhill have conservation areas, where the City of Doncaster Council has the final say. On a short drive where the car sits close to the gate, an inward-opening pair can be awkward. A sliding gate, like the low one in the photos above, runs across the opening and needs no room to swing.
Boards and frame colours
Composite boards
Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo with your enquiry and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.
Steel frames
Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Most of the gates on this page have black frames, which suit almost any board, but a frame can be matched to your windows, doors or fencing.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Doncaster
How much do composite gates cost in Doncaster?
As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width of the opening, hinged or sliding, the lock, the finish, an arched top and finials all move it. Send photos and a width and the fabricator will give you a provisional price for your opening.
Why do you ask for photos before visiting?
The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first. If you are happy with it, they visit to measure accurately and confirm the details. You are not waiting in for a visit only to find the price does not suit.
Will my brick piers take a composite gate?
Often, but it gets checked. A steel-framed composite gate is heavier than the timber gate it usually replaces, and a lot of older front piers were built to finish a low wall rather than carry a gate. The fabricator will look at your photos and confirm on the visit. Where a pier will not take the weight, a steel post set alongside is the usual answer, coated to match the frame.
Can I have a sliding gate on a short drive?
Usually, yes. A sliding gate runs across the opening rather than swinging into the drive, so it suits drives where the car sits close to the gate. It does need clear space to one side for the gate to slide into, the width of the opening or close to it, so include that side in your photos.
Do I need planning permission for a gate?
For most homes, not if the gate is no more than one metre high where it is next to a road used by vehicles, or two metres elsewhere. Some newer estates have open-plan front gardens with covenants in the deeds, and Bawtry and Tickhill have conservation areas. If any of that applies to you, check with the City of Doncaster Council before going ahead.
Do you cover Thorne, Bawtry and the villages?
Yes. Doncaster is covered along with the villages around it, including Armthorpe, Bessacarr, Rossington, Tickhill, Bawtry, Thorne, Hatfield and Sprotbrough. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
