Guide prices

Side and garden gates

£900 to £1,500

A single gate, fabricated and fitted. The lock, the finish, an arched top and finials decide where it falls.

Driveway gates

£1,800 to £5,000+

Fabricated and fitted. The width, the height, hinged or sliding, and the specification decide where it falls.

Width of the opening — the biggest single factor, and what decides between a single gate, a pair and a sliding gate.

Exposure — a fully boarded gate on high, open ground needs a stronger frame and deeper posts.

An opening that is not square — made to measure costs no more for an out-of-square opening, but it does need measuring properly.

Fence panels alongside — matching composite panels either side of a new gate.

Guide prices only. Your provisional price is worked out from your photos and measurements.

Photos first, then a price

  • 1 Send photos and a width

A few photos of the opening, its rough width, and a note if the walls either side lean or the ground slopes.

  • 2 Get a provisional price

A local fabricator looks at your photos and comes back with a provisional price and any questions.

  • 3 Measured on site

If you are happy with the price, the fabricator visits to measure accurately and confirm the details.

  • 4 Made and fitted

Your gate is made to those measurements on a steel frame and fitted by the same fabricator.

What Barnsley asks of a gate

Higher ground to the west

Barnsley climbs towards the Pennines on its western side, and Penistone, Silkstone, Oxspring and Thurgoland sit noticeably higher and more exposed than the town centre. Up there the weather comes in harder and sideways. A fully boarded composite gate is a solid panel, and in a strong wind it loads the hinges, posts and latch every time it gusts. The answer is in the specification: a frame and posts sized for the exposure, posts set deep, and a drop bolt on each pair so the leaves do not rattle against each other.

Openings that are not square

Older Barnsley houses and boundary walls are often stone, and after a century or so, walls lean, piers settle and ground drops away. An opening that measures differently at the top and the bottom is common. A stock-size gate gets packed out or trimmed to fit, and it shows. A made-to-measure gate is built to the opening as it actually is, which is why the fabricator measures at several heights on the visit, and why a photo straight on helps when they price it.

A gate with fence panels either side

If you are replacing a gate and the fence beside it at the same time, the fabricator can fit matching composite fence panels alongside the gate, so the boards and colours run straight through and the gate does not look like an afterthought. Fencing is offered alongside a new gate rather than as a job on its own, so mention both when you send your photos.

Boards and frame colours

Composite boards

Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.

Steel frames

Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black suits most boards and both brick and stone, but a frame can be matched to your windows, doors or fencing.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Barnsley

How much do composite gates cost in Barnsley?

As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, the exposure, hinged or sliding, the lock and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.

Can you fit composite fencing with the gate?

Yes, alongside a new gate. Matching composite fence panels can be fitted either side so the boards and colours run through. Mention the length of fence when you send photos of the gate opening.

My opening is not square. Is that a problem?

No. A made-to-measure gate is built to the opening as it is, including walls that lean or ground that drops away. The fabricator measures at several heights on the visit, and the gate is made to suit.

Will a solid gate stand up to the wind out towards Penistone?

Yes, if it is specified for it. On exposed sites the frame and posts are sized for the wind load, the posts are set deeper, and a pair gets a drop bolt so the leaves stay put. If your site is exposed, say so when you send your photos.

Why do you ask for photos before visiting?

The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.

Do you cover Penistone and Hoyland?

Yes, along with Darton, Royston, Cudworth, Wombwell, Dodworth, Silkstone and the villages around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.

Ready for a price? Send a few photos and the width of your opening, plus the fence line if that is being replaced too, and a local fabricator will come back to you with a provisional price.
