Stone piers and original ironwork

Much of Musselburgh is Victorian and Edwardian, and a good proportion of those frontages still have their original stone gate piers. That changes the job. A pier that has stood for a century is not a new brick one: the stone can be soft or delaminating at the face, the original hinge pintles may still be embedded, and the two piers are rarely quite the same height or quite plumb to each other.

None of that stops a gate going on, but it does decide how it is hung. We drill and fix into sound stone rather than the weathered face, and where the opening is out of square the gate is built to the opening rather than the opening being made to suit the gate. If the original railings or a matching pedestrian gate are still there, it is usually worth keeping them and matching the new work to what is already on the frontage.

The town also sits at the mouth of the Esk on the Firth of Forth, so the metal parts get salt air. The composite board is untroubled by it — the colour runs through the board and there is no coating for salt to lift — but the frame, hinges and fixings are worth specifying properly rather than taking as standard.

What affects the cost in Musselburgh

Common questions

Can you hang a gate off old stone piers?

Usually, yes. The piers need checking first — soft or delaminating stone at the face will not hold a fixing, and old embedded pintles sometimes have to come out. Where the stone is sound underneath we fix into that rather than the weathered face. Where it is not, making the pier good is a small job compared with rehanging a gate that has pulled loose.

My two piers are not the same height. Is that a problem?

It is common on older frontages and it is not a problem. The gate is made to the opening as it actually is, rather than to a stock size that assumes both sides are level. That is the whole reason for surveying on site before anything is made.
