Guide prices

Side and garden gates

£900 to £1,500

A single gate, fabricated and fitted. The boards, the lock, a screen panel and any fencing alongside decide where it falls.

Driveway gates

£1,800 to £5,000+

Fabricated and fitted. The width, the finish near the sea, and the specification decide where it falls.

Width of the opening — the biggest single factor, and what decides between a single gate, a pair and a sliding gate.

Salt air — a galvanised frame and hardware that keeps working near the Sound.

Fencing alongside — matching panels in the same boards, vertical or horizontal.

Stone walls — limestone and granite walls take a gate on a steel post set alongside.

Guide prices only. Your provisional price is worked out from your photos and measurements.

What Plymouth asks of a gate

Salt air around the Sound

From the Hoe and the Barbican to Mount Batten, Turnchapel and the Plymstock waterfront, plenty of Plymouth gardens get salt air off the Sound. Salt finds every weak spot: cheap hinges seize, bare steel bleeds rust through paint, and timber greys and splits. Here the frame is galvanised before it is powder coated, and the hinges, latch and fixings are chosen to keep working by the sea.

Horizontal boards and a fence to match

Garden gates with horizontal boards, like several in the photos, have become a popular look, and they work best when the fence alongside matches. Composite fence panels can be made in the same boards and colour as the gate, horizontal or vertical, so the whole run reads as one. We fit fencing as part of a gate job rather than on its own, so show the fence in your photos and it will be priced with the gate.

Limestone and granite walls

Older parts of Plymouth, from Stoke and Mutley to the villages around Plympton, have front and garden walls of grey limestone or granite. They look solid, but an old rubble wall is not built to carry the weight of a steel-framed gate swinging on it. The usual answer is a slim steel post set in concrete alongside the wall, powder coated to match the gate, so the stonework is left as it is.

Boards and frame colours

Composite boards

Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.

Steel frames

Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black and anthracite grey are the usual choices by the sea, but a frame can be matched to your windows or doors.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Plymouth

How much do composite gates cost in Plymouth?

As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, the boards, any fencing alongside and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.

Will a gate cope with salt air near the Sound?

Yes, if it is specified for it. The frame is galvanised under the powder coat, and the hinges, latch and fixings are chosen for coastal air.

Can you fit fencing to match the gate?

Yes, alongside a gate. Composite panels in the same boards, vertical or horizontal, are priced with the gate.

Can a gate hang on my old stone wall?

Usually on a steel post set in concrete alongside the wall, so the stonework is not asked to carry the weight.

Why do you ask for photos before visiting?

The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.

Do you cover Plympton, Plymstock and Saltash?

Yes, along with Mannamead, Peverell, Derriford, Elburton, Ivybridge and the areas around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.
