What Yeovil asks of a gate

Ham stone walls and houses

Yeovil and the villages around it, from Montacute and Stoke-sub-Hamdon to the Cokers, are built in golden Ham Hill stone. A gate in the wrong colour can look harsh against it. Warm browns, oak and walnut effects, or a dark bronze frame, sit far better than bright grey. Old Ham stone walls and piers are also softer than they look, so where they cannot take a steel gate a slim post goes in alongside and the stone is left untouched.

Side gates on the newer estates

Brimsmore, Lufton, Wyndham Park and the newer roads on the edge of town have semis and detached homes with a narrow passage beside the house. The side gate there gets used every day for bins and bikes, so it needs a latch that catches every time, a lock that works from both sides, and enough width for a wheelie bin. Horizontal boards in anthracite suit the grey windows on most of these houses.

Village drives onto lanes

Out in Martock, West Coker, Odcombe and the villages towards Sherborne, many homes have longer drives onto narrow lanes, where turning in needs a wide opening. An unequal pair, with a narrow leaf for walking through and a wide one for the car, works well there. Wide gates are built with a stiffer frame and a drop bolt so they stay level, and can be made ready for a motor later.

Boards and frame colours

Composite boards

Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.

Steel frames

Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black and anthracite are popular, and a brown or bronze frame sits well against Ham stone.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Yeovil

How much do composite gates cost in Yeovil?

As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, an unequal pair, the boards and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.

What colour gate goes with Ham stone?

Warm browns, oak or walnut effects, or a dark bronze or black frame usually sit best. Send a photo of the house with your gate photos.

Can a side gate be wide enough for bins?

Yes. Tell us what needs to pass through and the gate is made to suit, with a lock that works from both sides.

What is an unequal pair?

Two leaves of different widths: a narrow one to walk through every day and a wider one you open for the car.

Why do you ask for photos before visiting?

The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.

Do you cover Martock, the Cokers and Sherborne?

Yes, along with Montacute, Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Odcombe, Ilchester and the villages around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.

Ready for a price? Send a few photos and the width of your opening, and a local fabricator will come back to you with a provisional price.
