What Cockermouth asks of a gate
Where the Derwent meets the Cocker
Cockermouth stands where two rivers meet, and the town flooded badly in 2009 and again in 2015. A gate is no flood barrier, but what it is made of matters if water does come through. Composite boards do not take up water, swell or rot, and a galvanised frame under the powder coat will not rust from the inside. Once the water has gone, a hose down is all a gate needs.
A Georgian market town
Main Street, Market Place and Kirkgate are lined with Georgian houses, and the centre of Cockermouth is a conservation area, so Cumberland Council has a say over new gates on the fronts there. A plain design in black or a dark colour, at the height of the walls either side, suits the town best. If you live in the centre, check with the council before you order.
Into the National Park
Head south through Lorton, Embleton or towards Bassenthwaite and you are soon inside the Lake District National Park, where the National Park Authority handles planning. Homes there are often stone-built behind dry stone walls, and a gate that follows the line of the wall in a muted colour is the usual choice. Where the old wall will not take a hinge, a steel post goes in beside it.
Boards and frame colours
Composite boards
Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.
Steel frames
Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black suits the Georgian streets, and brown or a muted grey sits well against Lakeland stone.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Cockermouth
How much do composite gates cost in Cockermouth?
As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. Size, the top, the boards and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.
Will a composite gate survive if the river comes up?
A gate will not stop water, but composite boards do not swell or rot and a galvanised frame will not rust from inside, so it can simply be hosed down afterwards.
I live on Main Street. Are there planning rules?
Very likely, as the centre is a conservation area. Speak to Cumberland Council before ordering.
We are inside the National Park. Who do we ask?
The Lake District National Park Authority handles planning there. A gate that follows the line of the wall in a muted colour is the usual answer.
Why do you ask for photos before visiting?
The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.
Do you cover Papcastle, Brigham and Lorton?
Send your postcode with your photos and we will confirm which fabricator can take on your job, whether you are in Cockermouth, Papcastle, Brigham, Lorton or the villages around.
