Guide prices

Side and garden gates

£900 to £1,500

A single gate, fabricated and fitted. The boards, the lock and how it is hung on a slope decide where it falls.

Driveway gates

£1,800 to £5,000+

Fabricated and fitted. The width, the slope and the finish decide where it falls.

Width of the opening — the biggest single factor, and what decides between a single gate, a pair and a sliding gate.

Steep plots — gates hung to clear steps and paths that rise from the road.

River and sea — a zinc-coated frame and coated hardware by the Dart.

Conservation area — most of the old town, where the council has extra say.

Guide prices only. Your provisional price is worked out from your photos and measurements.

What Dartmouth asks of a gate

Houses on the hillside

Dartmouth climbs steeply from the river, and many homes are reached by steps or a path that rises from the road. A gate there has to be hung so it clears the first step, opens the right way and closes on its own without swinging back. Each gate is made to the measured opening, with the bottom raked where the ground falls away, and self-closing hinges where children or dogs need keeping in.

The river and the sea air

From the embankment and Kingswear up to Stoke Fleming, the Dart and the sea beyond it bring salt and damp. A gate here needs a zinc-coated frame under the powder coat and hinges and a latch made for the coast, so it does not seize or streak with rust. Composite boards do not rot, so the gate needs nothing more than a rinse.

The old town and the conservation area

Most of central Dartmouth and Kingswear is a conservation area, many of the houses are listed as well, and South Hams District Council takes a close interest in what goes on the front of them. A modest gate that follows the line of the old wall, with a dark frame and simple boards, is far more likely to be welcomed than anything showy. Ask the council early if your home is in the old town or listed.

Boards and frame colours

Composite boards

Board ranges vary from one fabricator to another, but they can fit almost any make. If you have seen a board you like, send the name or a photo and the fabricator will tell you whether it can be used.

Steel frames

Frames can be powder coated in almost any RAL colour. Black and anthracite are the usual choices by the river, but a frame can be matched to your door.

FAQs about Composite Gates in Dartmouth

How much do composite gates cost in Dartmouth?

As a guide, a single side or garden gate is around £900 to £1,500 fabricated and fitted, and a pair of driveway gates runs from around £1,800 to £5,000 or more. The width, the slope, the boards and the finish all move it. Send photos and a width for a provisional price for your opening.

My gate opens onto steps. Can it still be fitted?

Yes. The gate is hung so it clears the step and opens the right way, with the bottom raked where the ground falls.

Will a gate cope with the salt air by the river?

Yes, if it is made for it: a zinc-coated frame, coated hinges and latch, and composite boards.

My house is listed. Can I still have a new gate?

Possibly, but listed building consent may be needed. Talk to South Hams District Council first, then send photos.

Why do you ask for photos before visiting?

The fabricators on our network cover a wide area, so a visit can mean a long round trip. Photos and a rough width let them give you a provisional price first, and the visit to measure only happens once you are happy with it. You are not waiting in for someone only to find the price does not suit.

Do you cover Kingswear, Stoke Fleming and Dittisham?

Yes, along with Townstal, Blackawton, Strete, Slapton and the villages around them. If you are not sure about your street, send your postcode and we will confirm.

Ready for a price? Send a few photos and the width of your opening, and a local fabricator will come back to you with a provisional price.
